Visit the reef at night

$5,000.00

Diving at night is something very special and best done from a luxury private yacht such as the AJAO, where you will be in a small group of divers – to ensure that you enjoy this experience with fun and safety in mind and adventures on offer in the seemingly dark ocean environment. The lack of ambient light, makes this type of diving very different to daylight diving – and you will submerge yourself into a world of new and exciting wonders, waiting to be explored by you.

What happens on the reef at night
The scenery underwater changes dramatically when the sun goes down. If you have seen already bioluminescence on the surface of the ocean, imagine what it might be like underwater. Coral polyps open up, lobsters come out of their hiding places in search of food, octopuses swim freely and sharks begin to hunt. When diving at night from aboard AJAO, you have the opportunity to see the food chain in action and many other incredible encounters are waiting for you.

Moray Eels, Crustaceans, Lion Fish
Amongst the creatures you might encounter during a night dive are the sometimes scary looking – but unless provoked very harmless – moray eels. They swim in and out of crevasses and along the reef – always on the look for a quick meal. All manners of crustaceans are sticking out from under overhangs in the reef or crawl quickly along the rocks and coral. Lion fish are hovering effortlessly in the current – only to dart forward with mouths wide open, to gulp up unsuspecting little fish passing by.

If you shine your dive torch onto the reef and animals, you’ll notice that their true colours become revealed by the beam of light. In contrast to daylight diving, where with increasing depth the light more and more dims away and therefore the colours become less vibrant – on a night dive you will be amazed at how colourful the marine environment really is. Especially crustaceans and nudibranchs are amongst the most diversely coloured creatures on a reef. Try to avoid shining your light for too long onto smaller fish though – the hunters on the reef are just waiting for you to do so!
